Hindi, Bundelkhandi and Mongolian versioning for Rio Tinto documentary
November 2006

“The Life of a Mine” is designed as an educational documentary for educational institutions, new recruits and local stakeholders in the developing world in areas where mining may have an impact. The programme illustrates the life cycle of a mine – from exploration to closure – and explores the challenges faced by the modern mining industry in meeting society’s needs today whilst protecting the interests of generations yet to come.

Jacaranda undertook the challenging task of translating this important film into 6 foreign language versions to help communicate to local people Rio Tinto’s commitment to strict health and safety, social and environmental standards.

These foreign language versions have already made a positive impact on local viewers. This from Mongolia:

“I am writing to congratulate you and your team for commissioning the new version of this important film and assisting me to ensure a Mongolian language version was produced. The effort has paid off ten fold.

My community relations manager is conducting small focus group meetings amongst selected Mongolian groups here in Ulaanbaatar to gain impressions and feedback from the film. The response to date has been impressive, particularly so for the effort Rio Tinto has gone to in producing a Mongolian language version. Mongolian's are very proud people. … in the wider public education of what mining is all about there is real mileage in this production.”
