Few, in our experience, have figured out how to combine all three effectively – until now.</p> <p>We’ve worked with Barclays Citizenship and Brand Team for six years now on their Citizenship Awards, previously known as The Chairman’s Awards. Last year, more than 60,000 employees received direct support from Barclays for activities that benefited more than 8,000 charities and community organisations worldwide. Every year, the <a href="http://group.barclays.com/Citizenship/Community-Investment/Employees-in-the-community/Barclays-Chairman%C2%B4s-Awardshttp://">Barclays Citizenship Awards</a> celebrate the outstanding achievements and dedication of these people, who inspire and motivate their colleagues around them to get involved.</p> <p>From our point of view it’s a huge project – and it’s got even bigger this year. We create short films of each of the 30 finalists and then longer films for the winners and overall winner. This involves a massive logistical exercise, with camera crews shooting worldwide within a very short production timeframe. The films are then edited in-house, using our six Avid suites. You can read a little about the experience of one of the five camera crews filming this year’s finalists<a href="http://jacarandamimosifolia.wordpress.com/2012/05/13/a-proper-location-shoot/"> in this blog.<br /> </a></p> <p>In previous years, although the awards have generated a great deal of internal interest they have not really been publicised widely outside the business. This year, the challenge was to develop a means to run a parallel, public award – The People’s Vote – opening up the awards to all of Barclays staff, families, friends – and all of those involved with or interested in the projects around the world.</p> <p>Using <a href="http://www.jacaranda.co.uk/online">James</a>, our online video distribution and evaluation service, we developed a bespoke Facebook app that publishes all of the videos to the Barclays Volunteers Facebook site, allowing visitors to watch the films and then ‘vote’ for their favourites by using the Facebook ‘like’ button.</p> <p>Crucially, once a viewer ‘likes’ a film, it will then appear on their own Facebook wall, allowing the films to spread virally across all of those who vote and all of their Facebook friends. The Citizenship Awards celebrate outstanding Barclays employees that have brightened the lives of their communities worldwide with volunteering activity.</p> <p>From the moment that the Barclays finalists are announced we have 7 weeks in which to complete the production process, which includes arranging shooting in – and despatching film crews to 30 locations in 14 countries worldwide, getting them and their footage safely home, and then editing, creating graphics and finally delivering all 72 films hot off the press to the Awards Ceremony.</p> <p>Our brief is to film each Barclays finalist as well as the charity and community projects that they have supported. Working to the very tight turnaround period, our production approach has to be aerodynamic in its efficiency, whilst highly sensitive and friendly as the stories we are documenting often involve vulnerable and disadvantaged people. Our production team have ten days in which to create a rapport with all the Barclays employees, charitable and community projects and NGO’s involved so they can work out how best to film each story. Simultaneously they plan all the logistics of travel, before they and accompanying directors take off to start shooting.</p> <p>This year finalists were chosen from countries as diverse as Portugal, Spain, South Africa, USA, Canada, Nepal, India, Kenya, Pakistan, Switzerland, Egypt, Japan and Ghana. The extremely talented Marcus Stephenson and I, Zara Balfour, traveled to film finalists in the Asia Pacific region; first stop: Nepal.</p> <p>Arriving in Kathmandu we met the finalist team that, whilst working at Barclays in Singapore, had set up a charitable foundation to build schools and volunteer in rural Nepal. Over supper we learned more about their vision, enabling us to get further to the heart of their Himalayan story.</p> <p>Next morning we traveled together to see the schools and meet the schoolchildren they’ve helped. Getting there was by no means easy. In rural Nepal, there are few roads and fewer vehicles. It is common for a child to walk 3 – 4 hours each day to get to and from school. Some children live so far from their nearest school that they have to stay with family friends from the age of 7 or 8, often not able to return home to see their parents until they are in their mid-teens. Hence there is a desperate need here, in one of the world’s poorest countries, for more school building to be funded.</p> <p>Our journey into the Himalayas saw us crammed onto bench seats in the back of a jeep, clinging to its roll-over bars as the vehicle literally bounced its way up death-defying mountain passes. The roads are made of dust alone, meaning that the jeep had to be swathed in black plastic and we had to wear face-masks to survive the dust clouds that still managed to eek their way into the dark interior of the jeep and our lungs. We couldn’t see outside, it was blisteringly hot and we could barely breathe. The jeep was jerking suddenly and violently and throwing us passengers into each other every few minutes. We felt like illegal immigrants in a hostage truck. </p> <p>This ‘torture’ more than paid off when we stepped out of the truck several hours later. The view was heart-stoppingly beautiful: the verdant valley stretching for miles with a lazy winding river at the bottom, perfectly carved crop terraces clinging to the mountains that surrounded us, their corn swaying in the warm, gentle breeze and some of the world’s highest snow-topped mountains reaching to the horizon beyond. </p> <p>The final part of our journey had to be made on foot as we had reached the end of the roads. We arrived at the Future Village School, which was to be our home for the next few days as there are no hotels in this part of the world. Nor is there any electricity or hot water. It was beautiful in its simplicity and the most peaceful place we had ever been. And then came the moment we’d dreaded – checking whether our camera equipment had survived the dust and bumps. Happily it had, thanks to Marcus’ clever packing and kit streamlining, and we were able to start shooting the sunset.</p> <p>Whilst staying together in the school and eating supper under a night sky lit only by stars, we created a bond between crew and Barclays finalists that meant they could relax when the time came for their on-camera interview. Likewise we were enabled to represent their story truthfully and accurately on film. </p> <p>The next day we awoke with the dawn at 5am to get the camera kit ready. At 6am sharp, the mountains above and valleys below came alive with small children in colourful clothing wending their way across the tiny single-file passes towards us at the school. The walk to school may be long and tough but even children as young as 3 skipped across the passes with the assuredness of mountain goats, arriving at school eager to learn and star in their first film.</p> <p>Apparently the people of this region had never seen a foreigner until the Future Village School was founded 8 years ago; at that time the younger children had been so scared by the unfamiliar-looking face that they cried. Thanks to the Barclays volunteers that have been teaching them English since, they greeted us with a big smile and a “hello, hello, hello”. </p> <p>We all agreed that life in the “Kingdom of Mountains” was undoubtedly hard and underprivileged but nonetheless the people were some of the friendliest and happiest we had ever met. The Sichuan earthquake of 2008 shook the ground for a full two minutes …<p><a href="http://jacarandamimosifolia.wordpress.com/2012/04/12/learning-chinese/" class="more-link">Read More</a></p><img alt="" border="0" src="http://stats.wordpress.com/b.gif?host=jacarandamimosifolia.wordpress.com&blog=6949708&post=1755&subd=jacarandamimosifolia&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" /> <p><a href="http://jacarandamimosifolia.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/photo-4.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1760" title="photo-4" src="http://jacarandamimosifolia.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/photo-4.jpg?w=300&h=225" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a>The deadliest earthquake to hit China in recent history drew us eastwards to make our latest film for Bayer Group, documenting how the residents of Sichuan province in Western China have coped in the 4 years since the earthquake wrecked their lives.</p> <p>The Sichuan earthquake of 2008 shook the ground for a full two minutes with such force that it moved entire streets along by ten metres, killing over 90,000 people and demolishing towns all over the province to leave almost 5 million people homeless.</p> <p>The humanitarian crisis that followed was immense, but it also brought out the best of human spirit, in the form of tremendous worldwide support and volunteer aid programmes. We were asked to document the four-phase relief effort of the Bayer Cares Foundation for our film, with the talented Marcus Stephenson directing.</p> <p>Such a sensitive subject required a specialist approach. Barging in with suitcases full of equipment would have caused upset in what is still a very fragile region. We decided to shoot on the small but perfectly formed Canon 5D so as not to frighten our interviewees, some of them schoolchildren who had lost close friends when their school collapsed in the tremors.</p> <p>The journey to make this film started in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province. Soon after arrival, hunger struck our team and, despite not having a word of Chinese, we ventured into the old city for dinner. Our arrival at a traditional-looking restaurant was met with a look of disbelief by the staff who decided that pretending we weren’t there was the best way to deal with us interlopers. In need of sustenance, we ventured from our table to the counter area where we tried talking. Giggles, whispers and lots of running away to tell friends about the funny people met this approach.</p> <p>Next step was to draw pictures of what we’d like to eat. More giggles. No food. After much hilarity we hit upon the idea of pointing at other people’s food. A tad clumsy, maybe, but needs must. Success. Back then, the sheer novelty of seeing the Managing Director or, much more rarely, a member of staff appearing ‘on television’ was thought sufficiently novel to hold an audience’s attention for what now seems like an impossibly long time.</p> <p>Nowadays, a very large number of the films that we make are two to three minutes long – which seems to match a much more realistic assessment of the time available to our audiences to watch a corporate film.</p> <p>Meanwhile, whilst the films we make tend to be shorter, we also tend to find ourselves making much more of them. In fact, we’re currently delivering over 180 individual films over the course of the next three months.</p> <p>Another big change is the potential (and actual) size of our audiences. ‘Non-broadcast television’ used to be produced for very limited numbers of people. An audience of hundreds would have been considered a reasonable achievement – largely becuase audience numbers were generally limited by the number of VHS cassettes the client could afford to post to them.</p> <p>Nowadays clients are beginning to understand the potential of using and managing the multiple online distribution channels available to them. Bulky equipment and a large team would have slowed us down and invited too many questions from airport security, so we decided to shoot on two small cameras, the Panasonic AG-AF101e and the Canon 7D. This enabled a crew of two to whizz through an action-packed schedule in a cost-effective manner.</p> <p>Recording broadcast quality sound direct into the Panasonic meant we could film a huge variety of interviews in a short space of time, whilst the tiny Canon 7D freed us up to hit the streets, beaches, mountains and deserts of Oman with only a raised eyebrow from local officials who were amused by our presumed amateur enthusiasm for photography, even agreeing happily to pose for some of our shots.</p> <p>The cameras performed well, even in the scorching heat and sandstorms of Oman’s endless arid desert, aptly named the ‘Empty Quarter’. However we think there is still value in the term – until someone comes up with a better way to describe most of what we’re now doing.</p> <p>Over the last couple of years we’ve had some very interesting conversations (with <a href="http://jacarandamimosifolia.wordpress.com/2010/03/18/freudian-clip/">Matthew Freud</a>, <a href="http://burson-marsteller.co.uk/newsroom/2011/10/gavin-grant-uk-chairman-of-burson-marsteller-has-been-appointed-chief-executive-of-the-rspca/">Gavin Grant</a> and <a href="http://jacarandamimosifolia.wordpress.com/2009/10/13/the-smoking-peer/">Tim Bell</a> to name-drop just three) about what’s happening to the traditional roles of the PR and advertising industries. They feel the need to change their focus to become content producers…but the trouble is that, in most cases, they have almost no experience of managing and producing content longer than 30 second commercials – with the all the associated overheads and costs that this implies.</p> <p>Meanwhile back in the corporate world, this is, happily, exactly the sort of content that we are used to managing and producing. And now it seems that the way we all watch television is about to be revolutionised…</p> <p>Google are about to show off the fruits of their collaboration with various TV hardware partners at the <a href="http://www.cesweb.org/">Consumer Electronics Show</a> next week in Las Vegas – and everyone knows that Apple are supposed to be launching a TV sometime this year.</p> <p>All of which suggests that the time has come for our conventional assumptions about what a TV is (a screen connected to an aerial or a dish but nothing else) is about to change forever.</p> <p>Exactly what this means to the TV industry is anyone’s guess at the moment – but you only have to look at what Apple did to the music and publishing industries to conclude that it may not turn out terribly well for our big old-fashioned broadcasters.</p> <p>It’s pretty easy to see that some sort of connected TV that allows consumers to choose only the content they actually want (and probably ask for it by just talking to their Siri-controlled TV set) is going to be very attractive to viewers and not at all appealing – in fact, probably utterly terrifying – to the broadcasters and advertisers.</p> <p>As Evan Niu of Motley Fool notes <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/2012/01/05/whats-holding-back-apples-new-tv/">here</a>: <em>“As consumers ditch expensive cable TV packages for more affordable a la carte online offerings, content partners will have no choice but to give in to Cupertino. It’s a process that’s always time-consuming, sometimes rewarding and often frustrating – not least because many companies who should know better, are still using procurement processes designed for the bulk purchasing of paperclips and toilet rolls, self-evidently unsuited to properly assessing creative work.</p> <p>Others are adopting the ‘supplier’s briefing’ idea – where all the production companies invited to pitch are brought together in one room to take the brief and ask questions. It’s like being at a bizarre cocktail party – with no drinks and no friends – where the assembled characters are:</p> <ul> <li><span style="text-decoration:underline;">The Incumbent</span> Conspicuously calling all the client’s by their Christian names and laughing knowingly at their jokes.</li> <li><span style="text-decoration:underline;">The Regulars</span> – Nodding seriously to denote huge familiarity with the subject at hand but careful not to ask any questions at all because these could help the competition.</li> <li><span style="text-decoration:underline;">The New Kid</span> – from a production company no-one’s ever heard of called ‘Soil’ or something based in Spitalfields. Naively, he asks very relevant questions, the answers to which everyone else surreptitiously scribbles down.</li> </ul> <p>That said, some companies have put great effort into designing and running assessment processes that are, whilst rigourous, very fair in measuring both production companies’ general capabilities and specific creative ideas.
